An Unplanned Success Story
Have you ever had one of those moments where everything seems to fall into place when you least expect it? Well, this is one of those stories. Picture this: I’m exhausted, my luggage is overflowing, and I’m carrying a handful of luxury handbags. Little did I know, this unplanned moment would turn into a marketing victory.

The Journey That Changed Everything
I was travelling back from the Eastern Cape, a beautiful province in South Africa, after sourcing some stunning luxury Ankara-printed handbags with bamboo handles. My plan? Test the market and see how people would react to this new product for Shika Afrika, our homegrown clothing brand.
But here’s the thing — my luggage was already bursting at the seams, way over the weight limit. So, what did I do? I carried the handbags in my hands, brightly coloured and attention-grabbing as ever. At first, I felt a little embarrassed, hauling these bags around for everyone to see. But at that moment, I decided to turn my discomfort into an opportunity.
Turning Heads, Sparking Conversations
As soon as I walked through the airport, heads turned. People couldn’t help but notice these bold, beautiful bags. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those bright prints and bamboo handles were doing the advertising for me. Within minutes, people began asking where they could get their hands on these handbags.
Before I even reached my flight, I had sold one of the bags. By the time I landed at OR Tambo International Airport, three more were gone. One woman was so captivated by the bag that she stopped me and said, “I need this.” And just like that, we made a quick FNB Geo Payment right there in the airport.
All of this happened before I had even launched the bags on our website, www.shika-afrika.com.

A Lesson in Seizing the Moment
Reflecting on this journey makes me smile. I’ve always believed that you can create your opportunities, but that day, it became even clearer to me. I was tired, under the weather, and just wanted to get home. Yet, in that moment of exhaustion, I found the energy to embrace an unexpected chance to market our product.
My brothers, who were travelling with me, teased me about being extra. They couldn’t understand why I didn’t pack the bags and avoid the hassle. But you know what? I didn’t pay for that extra luggage — the luggage paid me.
Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back
Here’s the takeaway: Don’t let the fear of what others might think or the fear of embarrassment hold you back. Sometimes, life hands you opportunities in the most unexpected ways. All you need to do is grab hold of them even if they come in the form of a handbag.
So, what’s stopping you? Whether it’s carrying a bright handbag in an airport or launching that business idea you’ve been sitting on, take the leap. Check out our collection of luxury Ankara handbags at Shika Afrika, and remember, opportunities are everywhere even in your hand.
With this blog post, I hope you feel as inspired as I did at that moment. Let’s continue to support young entrepreneurs and their creative journeys. And who knows? Maybe your next big opportunity is just around the corner!
